چکیده

This is the general idea of the problem space hypothesis. The part icular detai ls of the construct ion of a space and the search through it depends on the task and on the person who solves i t . For instance, if the task is simple, as in the item-recognition task <16> and the three-term ser ies task <8>, the process of constructing a problem space is t r i v i a l . The task is easi ly assimilated to the knowledge of the problem solver. A person w i l l probably also generate a strategy quickly and execute it immediately and the time to solution is short. In contrast, the Tower of Hanoi puzzle and the Missionaries and Cannibals problem are examples where a human problem solver may have troubles in constructing a relevant problem space and a strategy. The time to solution w i l l , of course, be longer compared to simple tasks.

Does War Give Meaning to Human Life? Investigating the Endlessness of Human Wars from a Social Cognition Viewpoint

According to history, humans have never stopped fighting with each other and this endlessness and permanence of wars cannot have only external causes (threats) rather, it also has internal and psychological causes and identifying these causes is essential to reducing wars. The present study aimed to identify one of the psychological causes of the endlessness of human wars and assumed that war g...

Logic, language and the brain.

What is the role of language in human cognition? Within the domain of deductive reasoning, the issue has been the focus of numerous investigations without the emergence of a consensus view. Here we consider some of the reasons why neuroimaging studies of deductive reasoning have generated mixed results. We then review recent evidence suggesting that the role of language in deductive reasoning i...

Modeling the effects of argument length and validity on inductive and deductive reasoning.

In an effort to assess models of inductive reasoning and deductive reasoning, the authors, in 3 experiments, examined the effects of argument length and logical validity on evaluation of arguments. In Experiments 1a and 1b, participants were given either induction or deduction instructions for a common set of stimuli. Two distinct effects were observed: Induction judgments were more affected by...

G. Quantum Probability in Cognition G Quantum Probability in Cognition G.1 Theories of Decision Making

How do people make decisions under uncertainty? There have been three major phases of models. (i) Logic. From Aristotle’s time, the most common model of human thinking has been formal logic, especially deductive logic. For example, the title of George Boole’s book, in which he introduced Boolean algebra, was called The Laws of Thought, and that is what he supposed it to be. The first AI program...

The emergence of reasoning by the disjunctive syllogism in early childhood.

Logical inference is often seen as an exclusively human and language-dependent ability, but several nonhuman animal species search in a manner that is consistent with a deductive inference, the disjunctive syllogism: when a reward is hidden in one of two cups, and one cup is shown to be empty, they will search for the reward in the other cup. In Experiment 1, we extended these results to toddle...

Cortical bases of elementary deductive reasoning: inference, memory, and metadeduction.

Elementary deduction is the ability of unreflectively drawing conclusions from explicit or implicit premises, on the basis of their logical forms. This ability is involved in many aspects of human cognition and interactions. To date, limited evidence exists on its cortical bases. We propose a model of elementary deduction in which logical inferences, memory, and meta-logical control are separab...
